Prodigy of Mobb Deep has succumbed to his complications with sickle cell anemia on Tuesday (June 20).
According to his publicist, he was hospitalized for the complications in Las Vegas, but the exact cause of death has not yet been determined. According to XXL, his publicist released an official statement on his passing thanking fans for respecting his family’s time of mourning for now.
“It is with extreme sadness and disbelief that we confirm the death of our dear friend Albert Johnson, better known to millions of fans as Prodigy of legendary NY rap duo Mobb Deep,” the statement reads. “Prodigy was hospitalized a few days ago in Vegas after a Mobb Deep performance for complications caused by a sickle cell anemia crisis. As most of his fans know, Prodigy battled the disease since birth. The exact causes of death have yet to be determined. We would like to thank everyone for respecting the family’s privacy at this time.”
The 42-year-old hip-hop veteran had been in Vegas during the weekend for the “Art of Rap” tour beside other seasoned rap VIPs such as Ice Cube, KRS–One and Ghostface Killah.
As one-half of Mobb Deep, with co-member Havoc, Prodigy returned to the group after disbanding in 2012.
It is with a heavy heart that we send our deepest prayers, thoughts and condolences to Prodigy’s family and friends.
